The Penis
During sexual intercourse the penis plays a most important role in bringing about both the female's and male's sexual gratification. In the female it works on the orgasm-producing centres, and in the male it is the site in which the orgasmsensations are concentrated.

The penis has a very complicated structure, and one of its unique features is that for an organ of its size it has a very large blood-supply system. During sexual excitement a great deal of blood flows to the penis and fills the thousands of tiny cavities found in it. This leads to its erection, in which state then it can be inserted in the vagina of a woman to effect intercourse. The visible penis is not the whole of it. About one-third of its total length is inside the body. This part is known as the root of the penis, and attached to it are muscles which play a very important role in ejecting semen to the outside.

The head of the penis is known as the glans. It is covered with skin which can be pulled back until the shaft of the penis. This skin is known as the foreskin (or prepuce). The part of foreskin which is attached to the underside of the head is known. as the frenum. In certain cultures (mainly because of religious beliefs) the foreskin is removed by surgical means. This is known as the circumcision of the male. For those with uncircumcised penis, it is essential that the penis be washed regularly with the foreskin pulled back. Various kinds of secretions keep coming out of the penis, and these form a solid substance called smegma under the foreskin. Smegma, unless removed regularly, develops a distasteful smell and sets up irritation in the penis. The tip of the penis and the frenum are packed full of nerves which are among the most sensitive that the male possesses.

Erection
Just under the skin of the penis there are very many tiny cavities (hollow spaces). Each cavity is fed by a group of blood vessels. On receiving messages from the brain and spinal cord, the blood system brings a great deal of blood to the penis. This blood pours into the cavities, causing them to swell, until the whole organ is enlarged and erect and hard. It stays thus until sexual relief is achieved, either by discharge or by the direction of mmd to non-sexual things.
The blood vessels feeding the cavities in the penis are controlled by a network of nerves, which run directly to the spinal cord and brain. There are special centres in the spinal cord and brain that are concerned with sex. They receive and send messages connected with sex, and hence control bodily processes like erection.

There are various kinds of erections. One type, known as reflex erection, takes place without the participation of the brain. It occurs when the penis is directly stimulated by touch. Messages about the stimulation are conveyed by nerves to the spinal cord. The spinal cord then sends messages which set in motion the filling of the cavities in the penis with blood to cause erection. Another type of erection, which may be called automatic erection, occurs when the seminal vesicles are full to capacity. This fullness causes a sexual tension in the body as a result of which an erection takes place as soon as an opportunity for sex presents itself, without anything deliberate being done to stimulate an erection. Automatic erection often takes place during sleep and ends with ejaculation commonly known as a "wet dream".

Sometimes, a man who has no intention of love-making gets a fairly rapid erection on touching a woman's body. In this case, the sensations of the touch aroused the sexual centres in the spinal cord and brain to such an extent that they send back messages to effect an erection. Often, a person finds that he has a strong erection in the morping when he wakes up. Such an erection may be called a mechanical erection and probably has occurred because -the person has been sleeping on his back, thus putting pressure on the nerves in the sex centre of the spinal cord. Such an erection should not be brought down by intercourse or masturbation, as this is bound to put undue pressure on the urinary bladder, which in all probability would be full to its capacity early in the morning. If sexual intercourse is desired before the start of the day, it is best to first empty the urinary bladder.

Length of Penis
Many men carry a fear in the mind about the size of their penis. They think that it is not big enough and hence their sex life is not as satisfying as it should be. In almost all cases, this fear is completely groundless. There is absolutely no relation whatsoever between the size of the penis (lengthwise or diameterwise) and the ability of a person to produce sexual orgasm in a woman. All the parts of a woman that need to be stimulated to produce orgasm in her are within an easily accessible range, and not deep inside her. If the penis of a man is long enough to reach from his body into the vagina of a woman, he need not worry.

The average erect penis is about 15 centimetres (6 inches) long. The difference range is between 10 centimetres and 20 centimetres. The penis of a man which in its limp state is somewhat larger than usual will on erection not increase so much in size as that of a person which in its limp state is smaller than usual. In other words, the longer the penis in its limp state, the less will be its length-increase in erection. This indicates that there are very few people whose penis when erect is not about 15 centimetres long. However, it is again stressed that the size of the penis has no effect whatsoever on the ability to produce sexual orgasm in a woman.
